Digital painting tutorial for environments by J-Humphries Digital painting tutorial for environments by J-Humphries
I made this tutorial mostly as a means for me to better understand my own process. Since I occasionally get asked about it, I thought I'd share what I've learned.

Thanks a lot for sharing this! Very interesting and straight-forward (and good use of Google sketchup, too!)

Very interesting to read. Especially what you said at the end about attempts to paint loosely. Every now and again I've done the random brushstroke thing hoping it'd look cool and usually ended up with a complete mess. Looking back, the times when it came out looking good were when I wasn't thinking about stylisation at all, I was just trying to get an idea out and consequently made every stroke count.

Exactly. That's why it's so important to plan ahead.

Interesting seeing the process, I didn't realise you were using 3D elements as the basis for the drawing. I take it you're using a Wacom or similar?

Also 3D is a huge time saver. I would start an image in 3D, but it's a great step between the thumbnail sketch and the painting process.
