almost a thousand years ago, an entire nation left the confines of the only city on this desert world and migrated towards the stars. There they lived, forming an increasingly militaristic, and strongly regimented society. They left behind their old enemies, who didn't have the technological means, nor the political orchestration to either stop them or follow. While those in space almost forgot about those down below, the surface dwellers developed an all out hatred for their seemingly arrogant and pretentious cousins, vowing that if those above ever returned, they would do their best to destroy them in order to keep what territory had been gained when their enemies left.
What you see above you is the end of a tale. Five dissidents of the space-fairing regime are convicted of treason and sentenced to a fate worse than death: Exile. They are forced into an escape pod, and jettisoned from a prison ship onto their ancestors home. Landing in the middle of a global desert, they arrive on their old country disorientated, with no knowledge of where exactly they should go or what they should do. The old raiment they wear is the uniform of the time when the two civilizations were at war: so their very appearance is threatening to the indigenous population.
And now, these the five have crossed the desert and have stumbled their way into the planet's only city. Out of water and rations, and with no other hope of survival than the mercy of their enemies, the prodigals are welcomed home.
pretty depressing for some reason, though
"Rebellion at the stairs of the Roman Senate in 3000 AD."
I love the architecture, too.
