I've become enamored with this song from the Renaissance www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRry-f…, and I'm really curious about what they lyrics mean; so I decided to use the power of the internet to find out. If you speak French, can you listen to this song and tell me what the song is about?

Jean de Nivelle a trois enfants
Dont il y en a deux marchands.
L'autre escure la vaisselle;

Hay avant, Jean de Nivelle
Hay ! Hay ! Hay avant,
Jean de Nivelle est un galant.

Jean de Nivelle a trois chevaux :
Deux sont toujours par monts et vaux
Et l'autre n'a pas de selle;

Jean de Nivelle a trois beaux chiens :
Il y en a deux vauriens
L'autre fuit quand on l'appelle.

Reverso:

Jean de Nivelle has three children
Whose two traders there are.
Other clean up the dishes(crockery);

Hay before, Jean de Nivelle
Hay! Hay! Hay before,
Jean de Nivelle is a gallant.

Jean de Nivelle has three horses:
Two are always by mounts and valleys
And other one has no saddle;

Jean de Nivelle has three beautiful dogs:
There are two good-for-nothings
Other one runs away when we call him(it).

Jean de Nivelle has three big cats(chats):
The one takes mouse, and the other one rats.
Other one eats the candle.

Jean de Nivelle has a servant (valet)
If he is nor beautiful, he is not ugly
He accosts a virgin

Hay, hay hay before,
Jean de Nivelle is triumphant

Wow Jean of Nievelle sounds like a pretty average guy. Thanks for your help!

That's indeed old French, damn it's been a long time since I heard something like that... my mother used to read me stories in old French though when I was a kid. She studied it, so it was pretty accurate I guess... I didn't understand one freaking bit xD

That's pretty interesting. English from the middle ages is so different from modern that it's almost impossible to understand. Is it the same way with French, or did it change more slowly? I've heard that French was spoken by the elite of Europe for ages, so I wonder if it was as influence by slang as my native tongue was.

Well, in the Middle Ages it was indeed pretty different than what it is today, I was talking about 1600s/1700s French, which is closer to what it is today. It changed slowly but had time to do so, much like English... and it was indeed spoken by aristocrats throughout the world (and is still I think, in the Vatican for exemple).
Fun fact: pronunciation changed in France, but pilgrims that went to Québec kept the original way to speak: the Canadian "accent" is in fact closer to old French than modern French

It's about a guy named Jean De Nivelle. He has 3 children, two merchants, one dish washer(? weird old French word "escurer"). He has 3 beautiful dogs, two no-goods, one flees when it's called.
He has a valet who is neither handsome nor ugly. He got himself (married, I think) a maid.
He has 3 horses, two always away, one is not saddled. He has 3 big cats, one catches mice, one catches rats, one eats candles(?).

Between that, there's some Hay, hay, Jean de Nivelle, hay, hay. Not sure about these lines... The first means that Jean de Nivelle was either a Gentleman or a lover (or a no-good, in this case it means the same thing). The second one says that he triumphs.

I found more recent lyrics (if anyone is interested: [link] ) which sing about Jean being a hero without master nor enemies, rich, gets his 2 ugly and 1 dumb daughters married etc.

Blargh. Why are people always interested in old French texts?

In the last three years, you are the third one. I guess, any other lyrics are available on the Internet.

My french might be a bit rusty, but this is my best guess. Unfortunately it's in a weird old-style pronunciation of French so there are a few words I couldn't understand. I think I got most of it, though. Other commenters to help me out?

Jean de Nivelle has three children
Of whom there are two walking
The other who [something] the dishes
And before Jean de Nivelle
eh, eh, eh, before

Thanks a lot. I wonder if he was some kind of historical figure, or maybe just a kind?
